Rayon is a semi-synthetic fabric that is made of cellulose fibers extracted from wood pulp. It is semi-synthetic because these fibers are then processed under certain chemicals, after which we get the fabric that we call rayon. The reason behind the popular admiration of this fabric is the distinctively unique properties of its fiber. Rayon fiber, which is used to make rayon fabric, is very versatile. It can be dyed very quickly in any color. It is very soft and smooth on the skin. It is very cool and absorbent, making it good to use in hot weather. It can be used as a replica of silk, cotton, linen, wool, etc., because it can easily replicate their textures. It is very sheen and drapey, which is why designers commonly use it to make drapey sheen dresses. It is the most absorbent fiber of all, which makes the fabric very breathable. These are just some of the common properties of rayon fabric. Other than these, another very good thing about rayon fabric is that it is available in a variety of different types, which is why this fabric is thought to be the most versatile fabric.
Types of Rayon Fabrics:
- Viscose Rayon Fabric:
Viscose Rayon Fabric is also a semi-synthetic fabric made from the wood pulp's cellulose fibers. Conventionally it was made from silk. However, later on, silk was replaced by wood pulp which gives this fabric unique qualities. Some trees from which the cellulose fibers are extracted to make viscose rayon are beech, pine, spruce, hemlock, eucalyptus, bamboo, soy, sugarcane, etc. It is used to make both formal and casual clothing items.
- Modal Rayon Fabric:
Modal rayon fabric, unlike viscose, is made from a combination of natural materials. First, fibers are extracted from the beech tree, which is then processed. Then these semi-synthetic fibers are then mixed with other fibers like cotton. This blend of natural fibers is what we call modal rayon fabric. The blend makes the fabric appear different and gives it great strength and durability compared to standard rayon fabric. It is used to make household things like bedsheets, towels, pyjamas, etc.
- Lyocell Rayon Fabric:
This fabric is made almost exactly like modal rayon fabric. It involves the use of beech tree fibers mixed with other fibers. Yet, the only difference is that its fibers don't undergo such hard chemical processing compared to the fibers of modal rayon fabric. Less chemical usage provides this fabric with more softness and smoothness. It is used to make underwear, towels, jeans, etc.
- Polynosic Rayon Fabric:
This fabric is a mix of unique materials which undergo polymerization of a high amount during blending. It is a modal rayon fabric that experienced 55% of polymerization and came out to be called polynosic rayon. Other rayon fabrics only go under 40% polymerization, so the increased percentage of polymerization gives this fabric its unique qualities.
- Cuprammonium Rayon Fabric:
This fabric, just like some of the other rayon fabrics, is made out of a blend of natural fibers. The thing which gives this fabric its unique qualities is that these fibers undergo a synthetic process in which a chemical called cuprammonium is used, this is where the name of the fabric comes from. The use of this chemical gives the fabric an extremely fine look.
- Bamboo Rayon:
Unlike other rayon
fabrics that are made of beech tree fiber, this fabric is made of bamboo tree fibers
that, after extraction, are reshaped to create regenerated cellulose. These
fibers then undergo chemical processing, and bamboo rayon fabric is
obtained.
